Sensational Soul Singer Ruby Turner has lived, recorded & performed in Kings Heath

When you hear the name Ruby Turner, images of powerfully soulful performances come to mind. With a career spanning several decades, this multi-talented artist has made significant contributions to the UK music scene. But Ruby’s journey is also a love story with King's Heath, where she bought her first house, recorded music, and performed live. In a music career spanning more than 40 years, Ruby Turner MBE is best known for her album and single releases in Europe and North America. She is also known for her work as a session backing vocalist, with artists including Bryan Ferry, UB40, Jools Holland, and Mick Jagger She has also written songs that have been covered by musicians including Lulu and Maxi Piest


She achieved the rare feat, for a British singer, of reaching No. 1 on the US R & B Chart with "It's Gonna Be Alright" in February 1990. Between 1986 and 1995, eight of her singles appeared in the UK Singles Chart with "I'd Rather Go Blind" being the most successful, reaching No. 24 in 1987.


She is a regular guest on BBC Television's Jools' Annual Hootenanny performing every year from 2007 to the present and she regularly joins Holland and his band on their annual arena tours. She has also appeared as an actress on stage, film and television.



Ruby’s First Home in King’s Heath


Ruby Turner’s roots in King’s Heath began when she bravely chose to buy her first home in our suburb. Interviewed in The Times on 3 July 2022, she revealed that in 1965 she paid just £22,000 for "a lovely little terraced house in King's Heath with a south facing garden".


With friendly neighbours and a welcoming atmosphere, King’s Heath quickly became more than just a place to live; it was a community that embraced her artistic spirit.


King's Heath is known for its unique mix of vintage charm and contemporary flair, which resonated with Ruby's artistic identity. The lively high street and side streets, filled with local shops and cafes, paired with peaceful parks, became a backdrop for her creativity.


Purchasing her first home marked a significant milestone. It symbolized her hard work and commitment to her craft. Recording at Highbury Studio


Not far from her home, Ruby Turner also recorded the album "I'm Travelling On at the iconic King's Heath's Highbury Studio which was her first full-on step into Gospel, This esteemed studio has been a hotspot for many artists aiming to capture the essence of their sound.


Renowned for its high-quality analogue recording and welcoming vibes, which have seen artists like Duran Duran and UB40 record timeless tracks. For Ruby, this environment was perfect. It allowed her to stretch her vocal abilities and experiment with her sound. The analogue equipmen created a fertile ground for creativity, leading to tracks that not only showcased her powerful vocals but also her deep connection to King’s Heath.

Love was Here Tour Performance at the Hare & Hounds

On Friday 18 February 2022 she performed at the Hare & Hounds as part of her "Love Was Here" tour, The Hare & Hounds proved the perfect setting for Ruby to express herself, drawing a crowd from not just King’s Heath, but from across Birmingham and beyond.


Stepping onto the Hare & Hounds stage was an emotional experience for Ruby. This venue, with its vibrant décor and enthusiastic crowd, felt like home for her. She captivated an audience of over 200 fans, creating an electric atmosphere filled with soulful energy. The connection she formed with her audience was palpable, and her passion left a lasting impression on everyone who was present.


Ruby's show at the Hare & Hounds underscores the importance of community support in nurturing local talent.
